Since the dawn of the internet age, the UK and Israel have long been the heavyweights of the IT security industry outside the US. Hence, we turn our spotlight to them to identify the major trends.

Cybersecurity has long been a niche for nerds fighting for general management attention. Unfortunately, it only got the attention after the emergence of organized crime and state-backed malignant actors on the scene.

Nowadays we see hundreds, if not thousands of companies offering managed services, CISO competence, vulnerability assessments etc. Cloud and on-premise infrastructure as well as the digitization of the shop floor made things seriously broad in scope.

We have taken a sample of 40 mid-sized companies to showcase some trends in this ever-evolving market.

Key finding I: 75% of the sample claim a broad domain expertise covering at least three of the four classics - cloud, on-premise infrastructure, OT (shop floor) security, and security awareness trainings. Only 25% focus on only two or one domains. This has been vastly different some years ago.

Key finding II: Almost all are very keen on demonstrating expertise in customer verticals. Understanding the specific challenges in various industries seems to be at least as important for cybersecurity providers as mastering the technology behind. They rarely focus on one specific vertical, though.

Key finding III: The number one technological competence group is vulnerability assessment, managed security operations and incident response. Second is forensic analysis and compliance, and last is CISO services. An educated guess interpretation would suggest that it is still easier for cybersecurity providers to scale their operational and technological competence compared to more managerial layers
